Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress Following Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
