Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
