The defendant confessed to 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

An individual who contaminated sweets with sleeping medication and provided them to children at a summer program in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offences against two young males who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight minors and one adult experienced illness at the facility in July.

The senior citizen, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was remanded in custody ahead of a further hearing on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, handling the case, outlined the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She said his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer program which he managed.

The defendant engaged in a "treat game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and request they to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She said the defendant had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had worries in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "In the summer" his stepchild had concerns about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They decided to examine in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor said materials including lubricant, ointment and syringes were found, and his family member contacted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She stated the man continued to conduct the "sweet game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"The police had not gone out by that point," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

Mrs Prior said the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the family member notified the authorities a second time.

She said the man then engaged in the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
