Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
